SUMMARY
-In ancient times, people didn’t even have the basic necessary medical tools or expertise to lower the risk of death from childbirth.
-While pregnant, you aren’t allowed to eat most kinds of fish, lunch meat, cheese, or raw sprouts, and you can’t even have alcohol or caffeine. And to top it all off, you might spend 36 hours pushing an 8-pound, 20-inch-long baby with a head from 13 to 14 inches around.
-Spotted hyena have a special birth canal. During the birthing process, this special canal will sometimes rip apart, which isn’t just incredibly painful, it’s also deadly.
-Baby porcupines, called porcupettes, are born fully quilled rather than hairless like most newborn rodents.
-Females of Tasmanian devil can give birth to up to 50 raisin-sized joeys at once, which then have to crawl from the birth canal to her pouch.
-Some precocial mammals can give birth to young that are bigger than fully grown humans.
-The kiwi bird of New Zealand lays a single egg that’s up to 20% of mom’s body weight.
-Shingleback lizards only have one or two babies at a time, but those babies make up a third of their mother’s body weight.
-When desert spider lays an egg sac, her tissues start to degrade until the spiderlings hatch. Once this happens, she regurgitates her own liquefied insides for the babies to eat.
